ManchesterUnitedFootballClubwasfirstformedin1878,albeitunderadifferentname-NewtonHeathLYR(LancashireandYorkshireRailway).
Littlesuspectingtheimpacttheywereabouttohaveonthenational,evenglobalgame,theworkersintherailwayyardatNewtonHeathindulgedtheirpassionforassociationfootballwithgamesagainstotherdepartmentsoftheLYRorotherrailwaycompanies.
Indeed,whentheFootballLeaguewasformedin1888,NewtonHeathdidnotconsiderthemselvesgoodenoughtobecomefoundermembersalongsidethelikesofBlackburnRoversandPrestonNorthEnd.Theywaitedinsteaduntil1892tomaketheirentrance.
FinancialproblemsplaguedNewtonHeath,andbythestartofthetwentiethcenturyitseemedtheyweredestinedforextinction.Theclubwassaved,however,byalocalbreweryowner,JohnHenryDavies.Legendhasitthathelearnedoftheclub'splightwhenhefoundadogbelongingtoNewtonHeathcaptainHarryStafford.
Daviesdecidedtoinvestintheclub,inreturnforsomeinterestinrunningit.Thisledtoachangeofnameand,afterseveralalternativesincludingManchesterCentralandManchesterCelticwererejected,ManchesterUnitedwasborninApril/May1902.
ThenextinfluentialfiguretoarriveatUnitedwasErnestMangnall,whowasappointedsecretaryinSeptember1903butiswidelyacknowledgedasbeingtheclub'sfirstmanager.Hisside,includingnewsigningslikegoalkeeperHarryMogerandforwardCharlieSagar,finishedthirdintheSecondDivisionin1903/04andagainin1904/05.
Thefollowingseason,1905/06,wastoproveoneofthegreatestintheearlylifeofManchesterUnited.Thehalf-backlineofDickDuckworth,AlexBellandcaptainCharlieRobertswereinstrumentalinthesidewhichreachedthequarter-finalsoftheFACup,butmoreimportantlyfinishedasrunners-upintheSecondDivision.Twelveyearsafterbeingrelegated,Unitedreclaimedtheirplaceinthetopflight.
Tocelebrate,MangnallsignedBillyMeredithfromrivalsManchesterCity.NicknamedtheWelshWizard,MeredithhadbeenimplicatedinabriberyscandalatCity,andwasduetobeauctionedalongwith17otherplayers.Mangnallmadehismoveearly,andacquiredMeredith'ssignaturebeforethebiddingbegan.
Thewinger'sarrivalprovedtobeinspirational-MeredithsetupcountlessgoalsforSandyTurnbullin1907/08whenUnitedwontheFootballLeagueChampionshipforthefirsttime.Aschampions,UnitedplayedinthefirsteverCharityShieldin1908.Theydulywonthetrophy,beatingFACupwinnersQPR4-0thankstoahat-trickfromSandy'snamesake,JimmyTurnbull.
Thethirdtrophytobeaddedtotheclub'shonoursboardwastheFACup,attheendofatremendousrunin1909.UnitedbeatBristolCity1-0inthefinal,thankstoSandyTurnbull'sgoal.

1910-1919
ThewordsOldTraffordenteredfootballfolkloreforthefirsttimeduringthe1909/10season.
ThelandonwhichthestadiumwasbuiltwasboughtbytheManchesterBreweryCompany(JohnHenryDavies)andleasedtotheclub.Davieshimselfpaidforthebuildingwork,whichcommencedin1908underthesupervisionoftherenownedarchitectArchibaldLeitch.By1910,theclubhadmovedlock,stockandbarrelfromtheiroldhomeofBankStreet.
United'sfirstfixtureatOldTraffordwasplayedon19February1910.Thenewhostslost4-3totheirfirstvisitorsLiverpool,butthestadiumwassuccessfulinaccommodatingan80,000capacitycrowd.Twodayspreviously,theoldwoodenstandatBankStreethadbeenblowndownbystrongwinds-furtherevidence,perhaps,thatUnitedweresuitedtoandneededtheirnewhome.
Indeed,UnitedwerecrownedLeagueChampionsforthesecondtimeintheirhistory,attheendoftheirfirstfullseasonatOldTrafford-1910/1911.Theyclinchedthetitleathomeonthefinaldayoftheseason,beatingSunderland5-1withHaroldHalsegrabbingtwoofthegoals.
Halsewasn'ttheonlygoalscoringheroofthatsecondChampionshipseason.AnotherwastheswashbucklingforwardEnoch‘Knocker’West,whoscored19goalsduringthecampaign.UnitedalsowontheCharityShield,beatingSwindonTown8-4,withHalsegrabbingadoublehat-trick.
Despitesuchfeats,Unitedcouldnotkeepuptheirwinningrunandin1911/12,thedefendingchampionsfinisheddisappointinglyinthirteenthplace.Secretary-managerErnestMangnallborethebruntofthecriticism,andresignedtojoinUnited'sneighboursandrivalsManchesterCity.
ThesearchforMangnall'ssuccessorfinishedatthedoorofJJBentley,thepresidentoftheFootballLeague.UnderhisguidancetheRedsclaimedfourthplaceintheLeagueattheendofthe1912/13season.
The1913/14seasonwasaperiodoftransition,withCharlieRobertsandAlexBellsoldtoOldhamandBlackburnrespectively.Unitedfinishedin14th,withWestfinishingastopscorerforthethirdseasoninarow.
The1914/15campaignwasnotableforachangeofmanagement-inDecember1914,therolesofsecretaryandteammanagerwereseparatedforthefirsttime.Bentleybecamefull-timesecretaryandJohnRobsonwasappointedtolookafterandselecttheteam.
Robson'steamwasashadowoftheonewhichhadperformedsowellinthepreviousdecade,asonlyGeorgeStacey,BillyMeredith,SandyTurnbullandGeorgeWallremainedfromthe1909FACup-winningside.Notsurprisingly,theclubstruggled,onlyescapingrelegationbyasinglepoint.Torubsaltintothewound,Mangnall'sManchesterCitysidefinishedinfifthplace,thirteenplacesaboveUnited.
BeforeUnitedcouldformaplanforrecovery,theoutbreakoftheFirstWorldWarputfootballfirmlytothebackofpeople'sminds.TheFootballLeaguewassuspended,andclubsresortedtoplayinginregionalcompetitions.
UnitedplayedintheLancashirePrinicipalandSubsidiaryTournamentsforfourseasons,butthiswasalessthansuccessfuldiversion,themiserycompoundedbythefactthattwooftheclub'splayerswerefoundguiltyofmatchfixing.EnochWestwasbannedforlifeaswasSandyTurnbull,whojoinedtheFootballers'BattaliontohelpBritain'swareffort.
TragicallyTurnbullwaskilledduringabattleinFranceinMay1917,toleaveManchesterUnitedwithoutanotheroftheirearlycenturyheroesfortheirreturntoleaguefootballin1919/20.
ManchesterUnitedreturnedtoLeaguefootballon30August1919,followingafour-yeargapcausedbytheFirstWorldWar.TheteamforthatfirstmatchbackagainstDerbyCountyincludedmanynewfaces-infactonlytwoofthemenondutyhadplayedinUnited'spreviousleaguegameattheendofthe1914/15season.
BillyMeredithwasstillatOldTrafford,butreachingtheendofhisillustriousOldTraffordcareer.Hemadeonly19appearancesin1919/20whenUnitedfinished12thintheFirstDivision.Thenewherooftheterraces,JoeSpence,finishedtheseasonastheteam'stopscorerwith14Leaguegoals.Hewasjointtopscoreragainin1920/21,butthistimewithhalfthetallyasUnitedagainunder-achievedtofinishin13thplace.
ManagerJohnRobsonthenlefttheclub,tobereplacedbyJohnChapman,whorevertedtothedualroleofsecretary/managerlastheldbyJJBentley.Meanwhile,formermanagerErnestMangnallcontinuedtomakethelocalheadlineswithCity,astheymovedintoanewstadiumatMaineRoad.
Mangnallalsore-signedMeredithforCityanddespitehisadvancingyears,itwasperhapsnocoincidencethatUnitedwererelegatedintheirfirstseasonwithouthim,winningonly8oftheir42matchesin1921/22.
Chapman'steamthatplayedintheSecondDivisionwasbereftofanystarnames,andfailedtowinpromotionatthefirst(1922/23)oreventhesecondattempt(1923/24).Theon-fieldleadershipofFrankBarsoneventuallybroughtaboutamarkedimprovement,however,resultinginpromotionattheendof1924/25.UnitedfinishedsecondtoLeicesterCity,afterlosingonlyeightgames.
United'stopflightstatuswascementedwithaninth-placefinishin1925/26.Chapman'steamalsowentonagreatrunintheFACup,butthiscametoahaltinthesemi-finalswhenManchesterCitybeatthem3-0atBramallLane.City'sluckthenranout,astheylostboththefinal(toBolton)andtheirplaceintheFirstDivision.
NotthatUnitedsupporterscouldaffordtolaughatCity.Twomonthsintothe1926/27season,theyhadtroublesoftheirownwhentheFAsuspendedmanagerJohnChapmanwithimmediateeffect,thereasonsforwhichneverbecamepublic.Wing-halfClarenceHilditchtookoverasplayer-managerwhiletheclublookedforamorepermanentreplacement,but'Lal'wasreluctanttopickhimselftoplay,andtheteamsufferedasaresult.
Chapman'spermanentsuccessor,HerbertBamlett,arrivedlaterthatseason.HewasalreadyknowntoUnitedfansastherefereewhocalledofftheclub'sFACupquarter-finaltieatBurnleyin1909,whentheirteamwastrailing1-0inthemidstofablizzard.Bamlett,though,wastoocoldtoblowthefinalwhistle,soCharlieRobertsdidthejobandUnitedwentontowintheCupthatseason!
SadlyBamletthadnofurtherimpactonUnited'ssuccessastheirmanager.TheteamslowlyslippeddowntheFirstDivision,finishing15thin1926/27and18thin1927/28,onlytorecoverslightlyto12thin1928/29.JoeSpencecontinuedtoscoregoalsbythebucketloadbutnotevenhecouldstopUnited'ssteadydecline...
Thedeclinethathadstartedinthe1920'scontinuedattheoutsetofthe1930's.Unitedfinished17thin1929/30,tofilltheirfanswithdread.
ManchesterUnitedsquad,1935
Theirfearswererealisedinthenextseason,whenUnitedmadetheworststartintheirhistorybylosingtheirfirsttwelveleaguematchesinarow.Thedozendefeatsincludedback-to-backthrashingsatOldTrafford,6-0byHuddersfieldTownandthen7-4byNewcastleUnited.TheseasonwasintoNovemberbeforeHerbertBamlett'steamtooktheirfirstpoints,bywinning2-0athometoBirminghamCity.
Unitedeventuallylost27oftheir42leaguematchesin1930/31,conceding115goals.TheirrelegationledtoBamlettbowingout,andsecretaryWalterCrickmertakingchargeofteamaffairs.Therewastobenoimmediateimprovement,however.Unitedlosttheiropeningtwomatchesof1931/32,intheSecondDivision.
Thepatienceofthesupporterswasbeingseverelytested,andmanyofthemdidnothangaround-only3,507turnedupfortheopeningmatch.Astheseasonwenton,thesituationdeteriorated.ByDecember,therewasnomoneytopaytheplayerswages.Bankruptcywasarealthreat.
Theclub'ssaviourcameintheshapeofJamesGibson,amanufacturerofarmyuniforms.Heinvestedlb30,000,paidtheplayersandgottheclubbackontrack.Heappointedanewmanager,ScottDuncan,whowasgivenmoneytospend.However,hedidnotmakethemostofit.
WalterWinterbottom
AdreadfulrununderDuncanin1933/34tookUnitedtothebrinkofbeingrelegatedintotheThirdDivisionforthefirsttimeintheclub’shistory.Survivalwasonlysecuredonthelastdayoftheseason,whentheywon2-0withgoalsfromTomManleyandJackCapetosendtheiropponents,Millwall,downinstead.Inthatsameweek,ManchesterCityhadwontheFACup,withamannamedMattBusbyintheirside.
Unitedfinishedthe1934/35seasoninfifthplace,andthenin1935/36claimedtheirfirstsilverwareofthedecade.Unbeatenduringthelast19gamesofthecampaign,theysecuredtheSecondDivisionChampionshipwitha3-2winoverBuryatGiggLane,thankstogoalsfromManleyandGeorgeMutch.
Theirend-of-seasonformintheSecondDivisionsuggestedUnitedwoulddowellontheirreturntotheFirst,butbyChristmastheyhadonlywonfourmatches,includingoneonChristmasDayitself!Onlytenwinsinthewholeseasonmeantrelegation,withCityagainprovidingstarkcontrastastheLeagueChampions.TherelegatedUnitedteamincludedWalterWinterbottom,whowouldlaterbeknightedaftermanagingEnglandfor16years.
Theyo-yoingcontinuedasUnitedwerepromotedagainthenextseason,1937/38,asrunners-uptoAstonVilla.ScottDuncancouldonlyclaimsomeofthecredit,ashelefttheclubinNovember1937tobecomemanagerofIpswichTown.WalterCrickmeragainsteppedintothebreachasUnited'scaretakermanager.
ThehighlightofDuncanandCrickmer'sseasonwasthediscoveryofJohnnyCarey,whowouldlaterberecognisedasoneofthegreatestfull-backsinfootballhistory.Playing32gamesandscoringsixgoals,CareyhelpedUnitedtostayupthistime,finishing14th,whileCitytooktheirturntoberelegated!Therewasnotimetogloat,however-theoutbreakofwarputtheFootballLeagueonholdagain,forseveralyears.

On11March1941thestadiumwasbombedduringaGermanairraid.Theattackdestroyedthemainstand,dressingroomsandoffices.Itwasadevastatingblow,butwithinafewyears,therewouldbeoptimismagainaroundthefamousoldground.
ItcamewithamannamedMattBusby,whowouldprovetobethemostimportantfigureinthehistoryofManchesterUnited.AformerManchesterCityandLiverpoolplayer,BusbyservedintheNinthBattalionoftheKing'sLiverpoolRegimentwherehisleadershipqualitiesshonethrough.ThesequalitiesdidnotgounnoticedbyUnited.
BusbyjoinedtheRedsin1945,initiallyonafive-yearcontract.Littledidheknowhewouldstillbemanagingtheclub25yearslater!
Busbydidn'twasteanytimeinmakinghismark,alteringthepositionsofseveralkeyplayers.Healsofoundedthe"FamousFive"forwardswhenhebroughttogetherJimmyDelaney,StanPearson,JackRowley,CharlieMittenandJohnnyMorris.
PerhapsthemostimportantsigningBusbymade,however,wasonthecoachingstaff.MatthadmetJimmyMurphyduringthewar,andidentifiedhimashisperfectright-handman.ThepairformedapartnershipthatwouldseeUnitedbecomeapowerinworldfootball.

BusbyandMurphy'sfirststepontheroadtoglorywastobuildateamthatwascapableofchallengingfordomestichonours.Theysucceededalmostatthefirstattempt,asUnitedfinishedsecondtoLiverpoolinthefirstFootballLeaguecampaignafterthewar,1946/47.Itwastheclub'shighestplacingfor36years,andtherewasextracauseforoptimismwhentheReserveswontheir(Central)LeagueChampionshipinthesameseason.
Busby'smixofyounglocalladsandestablishedplayerswontheirfirsttrophythefollowingyear,whentheybeattheBlackpoolsideofStanleyMatthews,StanMortensenandHarryJohnstoninthe1948FACupFinal.Itwas39yearstothedaythatUnitedhadpreviouslywontheCup,in1909.
TheFACupwasalsotheclub'sfirstmajorhonoursincewinningtheLeagueChampionshipin1911,andrecapturingthetitlewouldnowbecomethenumberonetargetforMattBusby'smen.Duringthefirstfiveseasonsofhispost-warreign,Unitedfinishedsecondonfouroccasions,andfourthontheother(1949/50).
Thethrillofthechaseforhonoursbroughtthefansfloodingback–morethanonemillionofthempassedthroughtheturnstilesinthe1947/48season,draggingthecluboutofdebt.Surelythesefanswouldn'thavetowaitlongtoberewardedwiththeprizetheyallcraved….
The1950'sdawnedwiththebreak-upofMattBusby’sfirstsuccessfulUnitedside-the1948FACup-winningteam.
DressingroomdissentledtoJohnnyMorrisdepartingforDerbyandCharlieMittenexportinghiswingwizardrytoColombia.SomeUnitedsupporterswereworriedtolosestarplayersofthatcalibre,butanyfansthatplacedtheirfaithinBusbyweresoonrewarded.
ThegreatScot’splanwastopromotetheyoungstershe’dbeenrecruitingandgroominginthelate1940’s.JackieBlanchflowerandRogerByrnewerethefirsttoemergeandbelabelled‘Babes’bythenewspapers;intheirdebutseason1951/52,UnitedwontheLeagueChampionshipforthefirsttimesince1911.
Byrne,aged21,playedabigpartinthatsuccess,making24appearances,includingthefinalsixonthewing,fromwherehescoredsevengoals.Hethenreturnedtohiscustomaryleft-backrole,andcaptainedthesideforfouryearsfromFebruary1954.
In1955/56and1956/57,ByrneliftedtheChampionshiptrophyasskipperofagreatyoungsidethatincludedseveralmoreproductsofBusby’syouthacademy.EddieColman,MarkJonesandDavidPeggwereallfirstteamregulars,havingcuttheirteethintheFAYouthCup,whichUnitedwonfiveyearsinarowfromitsinceptionin1953.

Notalltheyoungtalentwashome-grown,however.TheUnitedmanagerwasequallyhappytoplungeintothetransfermarket,andinMarch1953,hespentonepoundshortofthirtythousandonTommyTaylor,theprolificBarnsleystriker.Heprovedtobeanexcellentsigning,ashecontinuedtoknockinthegoalsforUnitedandEngland.Anotherbig-moneytransfersawHarryGreggarrivefromDoncasterRoversinDecember1957.Thefeeoflb23,000wasaworldrecordfeeforagoalkeeperatthetime,butitwasmoneywellspentasGreggimmediatelybecameUnited'sregularshot-stopper.Hewasalsonumberoneforhiscountry,NorthernIreland.
